Track spending with ChatGPT and Loaf Budget

Loaf Connect lets ChatGPT request your authorized Loaf account data through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Use it to investigate spending and inspect transactions in a conversation you already use.

Before you connect

You need a Loaf Budget account with records to explore and a ChatGPT account that permits custom MCP connections. Your workspace administrator or security settings may restrict this feature. Start a Plus trial in Loaf Accounts, connect a supported bank, then follow the setup below. No invitation is needed.

A connection is separate from a public directory listing. This guide describes custom setup and does not imply that Loaf is featured, verified, or endorsed by OpenAI.

Add Loaf as a custom connection

Open Loaf Connect and copy the MCP server address shown there. In ChatGPT Plugins, choose the plus button, then Add custom MCP server. Enter the Loaf name and server address, configure the offered authentication, and follow the Loaf sign-in and consent flow.

Review the requested access, create and install the resulting plugin, then select it in a new conversation. Interface labels and availability can change; consult OpenAI’s current connection guide if your controls differ.

Ask a question with clear boundaries

Try: “Compare my grocery spending in August and September 2026, and show the transactions behind the difference.” Or: “Show my posted spending by category for September 2026.” Specify the accounts and dates when you want a narrow answer.

Account balances are snapshots, not spending totals. Ask which dates and records are included before interpreting a result. Charts and embedded transaction views depend on support in the host app; a text result should still explain the records used.

Choose and manage permissions

Connections start with read access. You can separately allow supported changes, such as category and tag edits, with some edits requiring a separate confirmation in your AI chat. An edit to a Loaf record does not move money at a bank.

The AI provider processes the financial results it requests under its own policies. You can turn editing off or disconnect an app in Loaf Connect. If setup fails, contact Loaf support with the step and error message, leaving out codes, tokens, and financial records.
